What exactly is spyware? Are all these anti-virus updates really necessary, is installing an anti-virus system not enough?

Malware is another term you might be aware of, its basically software that will harm your computer by various means. Its all the same thing really. Spybot I hear is a good one, AVG is a good virus scan.
I did discover a free program recently that is an all in one optimization program for your computer. there is a certain scan in it whereby it prevents spyware from entering your system in the first place and that is only a fraction of what the program can do.
I think all schools and institutions should have this program on every PC. It would certainly prevent you having to call a PC tech support guy every time something goes wrong.
You can download that program here http://www.tinyurl.com/jdcool its called advanced system care by a company called Iobit.

In short spyware suggests a software that monitors or collects information on the target computer and is typically hidden from the user. but it's not really a virus. An anti-spyware software should be used to remove threads (of course if your antivirus is not bundled with one).
As for updates all programs should be up to date as new threads appear everyday, so your anti-virus/spy-ware will be able to detect newest threads
