Save money by switching: it`s official!

While the global economic outlook may be improving slowly, household finances here in Ireland are still being squeezed as the country struggles to find it’s fiscal feet.

The latest figures from the National Consumer Agency (NCA) show that 83% of Irish consumers who switched service providers across key industry sectors in the last 12 months saved money by doing so.

Savings across the board

The survey of 1,000 consumers aged 15 to 74 by Amarach Consulting revealed that 92% of those who had switched electricity providers had made savings, 88% had saved on home insurance, 84% on car insurance and 76% saved on both their mobile and broadband services.

"We welcome the news that more consumers are continuing to switch and in doing so they are making real savings,”said Maria Hurley, Director of Research, Policy and Communications at the NCA. “Consumers want a fair deal and they can achieve this by shopping around.

“With consumer incomes shrinking, insurance premiums in many areas rising and the prospect of a tough budget, every penny counts. People are hungry for better value and eager to switch if they think they can make savings,” she said.

Ms Hurley also pointed out that the market for many services is constantly changing, so even if consumers have already switched providers in the past, it can pay to keep a close eye on the latest deals to potentially save even more.

Switching providers is easy

One of the main barriers to changing service providers -- particularly for things like energy utilities and telephone operators -- is the perception that it’s complicated, difficult to do or will result in upheaval and inconvenience that offsets the financial incentive. But the research reveals a very different picture.

Most people (around 80%) find the experience of switching providers easy, and 87% report that the service they receive from their new provider is as good as or better than before.

So shop around, and if you find another provider is offering a better deal, and your existing provider isn’t prepared to match it, there’s very little reason not to make the switch.
